Lahore: Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Sardar Usman Buzdar on Tuesday (August 31) said that the Punjab Government Rules of Business 2011 had been modified, allowing the bureaucracy in the south Punjab to handle people’s concerns locally.

The said decision was taken in the 47th meeting of the provincial cabinet. Following the decision, Bahawalpur will be designated as the South Punjab Secretariat with 11 districts. The districts in South Punjab include Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur, Dera Ghazi Khan, Khanewal, Layyah, Lodhran, Multan, Muzaffargarh, Rahim Yar Khan, Rajanpur and Vehari. After the amendments, the Additional Chief Secretary (ACS) will be allowed to transfer BS-17 grade officers. Additionally, 17 departments have been transferred to the South Punjab province.

The minister said that the government has allocated a PKR 190 billion budget (33% of the total) to South Punjab. Similarly, the newly appointed and empowered ACS will be authorised to write annual confidential reports of secretaries and manage the affairs of the south side of the province. The cabinet also approves the establishment of the Punjab Commission for Illegal Housing Societies headed by retired Justice Azmat Saeed.
