Islamabad: The federal government will launch the bidding process for a 1,000-megawatt (MW) solar power project beginning next week, news sources reported on January 6.

The information was shared in a briefing given to Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday. The meeting was informed that in the initial phase, a total of 1,000 MW of solar panels would be installed in the buildings of the federal government with the aim of reducing energy bills by 30% by the year’s end. In addition, the policymaking process for the production of solar panels at the local level in the country has also entered the final stages, in which the consultation with the industries related to the production of solar panels has also been completed.

It is important to note that to meet the country’s ambitious renewable energy targets, PM Shehbaz has approved a plan to generate 10,000 MW of solar power over the long term. The premier said that the government is committed to making the country more energy efficient and securing a greener, more sustainable future. The projects would generate carbon-free energy, reduce fossil fuel dependence, and cut energy import bills.
