Lahore: The Environment Protection Agency (EPA) has informed the Lahore High Court (LHC) of its decision to close all the brick kilns in Punjab from November 7 to December 31 – in a bid to control smog levels ahead of the winter season, according to a news report published on September 24.

A report submitted before the LHC detailed that the secretary for the environment department held a meeting with the Brick Kilns Owners’ Association Pakistan to discuss an environment related petition – and finalised an accord to shut down the brick kilns for two months.

Moreover, the report revealed that the chief secretary held a virtual meeting with the deputy commissioners in Punjab under the chairman of the judicial environment commission. During the said meeting. instructions were given regarding to control emission from kilns, industrial units, stubble burning, and solid waste burning in order to restrain accumulation of smog.
Previously, the Punjab government had announced a four-year programme to shift brick kilns to zigzag technology at a cost of PKR 200 million. Under the said initiative, training to implement zigzag technology will also be imparted.
