Karachi: The Sindh government plans to construct either a small dam or a storm-water drain near the Northern Bypass to give way to the incoming rainwater from the Khirthar mountain range, the Sindh Chief Minister (CM) Syed Murad Ali Shah revealed on Thursday – according to a news source.
A similar storm drain is also being planned in Hyderabad to protect the city from flash floods.
The CM provided these updates in a meeting with the new British Deputy High Commissioner Mike Nithavrianakis who met Shah on Thursday.

CM Shah further said that the natural waterways in both Karachi and Hyderabad had been severely encroached upon – because of which rainwater could not pass through the storm-water drains.
He said that the Northern Bypass, New Sabzi Mandi, and various societies and townships had recently emerged on the main natural drains, so the water had no way to flow down to the sea; blaming these constructions as being the major instigators behind these incidences of flooding.
