Karachi: The Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan announced on Wednesday (August 4) that the country’s largest cancer treatment facility Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust (SKMT) that’s being developed on 95 acres of land DHA City Karach is progressing rapidly and it will receive its first patient in December 2022, news sources reported.

The hospital groundbreaking was performed by the premier in 2016. This particular facility is twice the size of SKMT in Lahore and will be equipped with state of the art equipment. The project development relies heavily on donations and charitable contributions extended by Pakistani donors from across the world. Reportedly, the project has an estimated budget of PKR 19 billion for the fiscal year 2021-22.
Via his official Twitter account, the PM revealed on August 4 that the construction work at the project site is going according to the schedule. The multi-billion project is the third such facility in the country after SKMT Lahore and Peshawar and once completed will be equipped with cutting edge technology and cancer care treatment equipment. The Joint Commission International, an apex authority of cancer treatment standards, has recognised and accredited the hospital at a global scale.

Since its inception in 1985, the SKMT has treated millions of deserving patients from various socio-economic backgrounds at an estimated cost of PKR 53 billion. The project’s annual budget is PKR 19 billion, out of which half the amount is expected to be collected in form of Zakat and donations.
