Skardu: Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry on Tuesday announced that the government has decided to establish a new international standard airport in Skardu to boost tourism, according to media reports.

According to the federal minister, existing airports in Gilgit and Skardu are being renovated to international standards. He further stated that Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan has directed that all airports be linked to tourism and that airports be operational all year.
Gilgit and Skardu are major tourism hubs in Gilgit-Baltistan, and having an all-weather international airport is critical to boost tourism especially international tourists. Skardu’s domestic airport now has two asphalt runways, one 8,740 ft long and the other 11,944 ft long.

To encourage tourism in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has just begun flying national flights to Skardu from cities such as Faisalabad, Karachi, Islamabad, and Lahore. To encourage tourism, PIA relaunched its Safari Air flights last month.
