Hyderabad: The Supreme Court-mandated commission on water and sanitation has directed the authorities concerned to operationalise a Sindh Industrial Trading Estate (SITE) filtration plant within 15 days, a news source reported. The commission had expressed displeasure over concealment of the 5MGD filtration plant.
Justice (retired) Amir Hani Muslim said he was surprised to learn about the existence of the plant and expressed dismay that it had remained non-functional since 2012. He came to know about the plant after chairman of the commission’s task force Jamal Mustafa Syed pointed out its location on Google Maps.
SITE had set up the plant at a cost of PKR 560 million in 2012. It had 12 concrete pre-settlement tanks, alum dosing arrangements, two huge clarifiers, chlorination arrangements, and filter beds. Moreover, the plant had not been operational since the year it was established, nor was it handed over to the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA).
