Karachi: The Sindh cabinet on Wednesday (October 26) approved the transfer of the urban immovable property tax management department, previously working under the provincial excise department, to the local government (LG) department, news source reported.

At a ceremony held in the urban tax department, Sindh Local Government Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah said that the local government will be required to collect taxes beginning in July 2022. He stated that the new approach will increase the resources available to local governments, allowing them to be more effective in assisting citizens. According to the specifications, under the new arrangement, the excise department’s property tax wing will be linked for three years with local councils to ensure successful tax collection.

It is worth noting that the provincial administration has vowed to make local governments more efficient at providing services by using new and enhanced procedures. Tax changes are one of the strategies that increase the financial independence of local governments.
