Karachi: The Sindh Government has filed a review petition in the Supreme Court seeking reversal of orders regarding the ongoing anti-encroachment operation in residential areas, a news source reported. The petition maintains that the drive in residential areas may cause problems for the government.
Sources privy to the development said that the ongoing drive in the metropolis would take approximately one year to complete as Karachi had innumerable encroachments and other illegal structures.
Authorities planning operations in residential areas would have to get an approval from the provincial government in the form of a No Objection Certificate (NOC).
The ongoing campaign, initiated by the metropolitan and development departments, is limited to the areas within the jurisdiction of the Karachi Municipal Corporation (KMC) and Karachi Development Authority (KDA).
The whole operation will be completed in two phases. So far, the authorities have demolished 7,500 shops and 22,000 encroachments as phase one of the operation pertains to the demolition of illegal commercial properties.
