Karachi: Sindh Chief Minister (CM) and Finance Minister Murad Ali Shah on Tuesday (June 14) announced the allocation of PKR 4 billion for the procurement of buses for the mass transit system of the province, news sources reported. Reportedly, the buses will be made part of the Sindh Peoples Intra-district Bus Project.

Under the project, the major cities of the province will be provided with a new and improved mass transit system for daily commutes. CM Shah said that the main focus of the Sindh Peoples Intra-district Bus Project will be Karachi as it is not only the biggest city in the country but is also in need of an improved and comfortable system of transportation. He stated that the Sindh Peoples Intra-district Bus Project aims to provide a modern, efficient, and sustainable transportation system to all socioeconomic strata in Karachi.

The project will include 250 buses that will run on seven routes in Karachi and one route in Larkana. In this regard, consultations with China and Turkey are underway to add further fleets. Furthermore, training schools will be established under the public-private partnership (3P) model in Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, and Larkana for driver training.

In the first phase, the department would develop modern terminals in Karachi, Thatta, and Badin, while the revenue department has granted 100 acres in Scheme 33 for the construction of a terminal in the city.
