Karachi: Sindh Information Minister Saeed Ghani on Monday (November 29) said the provincial government wants to initiate legislation to regularise illegal constructions in the province, news sources reported. He stated that the action is being taken to avoid a housing crisis in the aftermath of the recent Supreme Court verdict regarding unlawful constructions.

In an interview with the media in Peshawar, the minister stated that demolishing all unlawful structures in Karachi would result in the eviction of millions for whom the government would be unable to compensate. As a preventive step, the government would introduce legislation to legalise multi-story high-rise buildings and dwellings erected on state property that violated the city’s master plan. He stated that the law is the same as that of the Punjab government, which has constituted a commission to regularise 6,000 illegal housing developments. Sindh will follow the same procedure.
