Karachi: The Sindh forest department has declared the intertidal zone of Thatta and Sujawal districts as protected forests on the direction of the Sindh High Court (SHC), news sources reported. The notification was issued under Section 29 of the Forest Act, 1927.

As per the notification issued by the Sindh Forest Department, an area measuring 750,000 acres has been declared protected divided into two sections. Section 1 starts from the boundary of Mirpur Sakro and moves towards Gharo, Ghaggar Phatak, Deh Pipri, area of Port Qasim, ending at the west boundary of Ibrahim Hydri. Section 2 starts from the Sir Creek border and includes areas in front of Jati taluka and surrounding areas of Shah Bandar before ending at Kharo Chann. Furthermore, the western boundary continues to follow reference number 22 (N 24 81215 E 67.306.727) and advances towards Deh Ibrahim Hyderi, reference number 22 (N. 24.777469 E 67.126083).

The notification also identifies the Korangi and Phitti creek systems, as well as Bundal and Buddo islands, as protected areas, making any significant activity or forest cutting effort illegal. The Sindh government took the decision to declare mangrove forests as protected land on February 2, this year in a provincial cabinet meeting.
