Karachi: The government of Sindh on Monday (January 31) announced the discovery of a new reserve of coal at Block 1, Islamkot in Tharparkar, the news source reported. It was reported that the discovered reserves amount to 3 billion tons of coal deposits equivalent to five billion barrels of crude oil.

Reportedly, the discovery was made during the Thar Coal Block 1 project’s exploitation by the Sino-Sindh Resources Ltd. (SSRL) Coal Mine Project, which is sponsored by Shanghai Electric and is part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Provincial Minister for Energy Imtiaz Ahmed Sheikh stated that the first phase’s annual coal production will be 9 billion tonnes that will generate revenue for the country. Furthermore, Shanghai Electric stated that the project’s ‘Seam A’ was located at a depth of 145 metres and will generate 7.8 million tonnes of coal each year.

It is important to note that the Thar Coal Block-1 project is a USD 3 billion project carried out under the CPEC, which also includes a 1,320-megawatt coal-fired power plant that is nearing construction. The project is eagerly anticipated in Pakistan since it would provide a significant supply of dependable and economical indigenous coal-based energy.
