Karachi: The Sindh Cabinet has approved a grant-in-aid of PKR 10.065 billion for the construction of 80-square-yard houses for 6,932 individuals displaced by the demolition of homes along Gujjar, Orangi, and Mahmoodabad nullah, as reported on August 16.

As per details, the housing project is to be developed on a 258-acre land allotted in Taiser Town Scheme 45 by the Malir Development Authority. The decision was taken during a cabinet meeting on Thursday, chaired by Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah and attended by provincial ministers. The local government department was directed to submit the revised PC-1, amounting to Rs4.62 billion, for the internal development of the area. The plan includes the construction of essential infrastructure such as roads, water supply, sewerage, storm-water drainage, power supply, and a mosque.

The Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) has estimated the cost per house at PKR 1.45 million, with funds to be disbursed to the affectees in stages: PKR 500,000 at the commencement of work, another PKR 500,000 upon completion of masonry up to roof level, and PKR 450,000 for finishing the grey structure. The cabinet has given preliminary approval for this tentative amount, with the final beneficiary list to be verified and provided by the focal person, as per the Supreme Court’s directive.
