Hyderabad: The Sindh government has yet to take over control of the Darwat Dam project from the executing agency in order to commence with the operations of the water scheme, a news source reported. Project Director Lutufullah Shaikh revealed this information to a 15-member delegation of the Sindh Chamber of Agriculture (SCA) during a visit of the project site in Jamshoro on Monday.

He informed SCA Vice President Nabi Bux Sathio that the project had been completed and the officials concerned were simply waiting for the provincial government to take over the control of the project. The executive was due to take over the control of the operations from the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) by June 30, but the transfer did not take place on the prescribed date.

A Chinese company had commenced with the construction work on the dam project in January 2010. It was completed in 2014 at a cost of PKR 11 billion borne by the federal government.
The Sindh government’s planning and development department could not take over control of the dam since this process required of the executive to seek approval from schedule of new establishment (SNE) for the dam.
