Karachi: The Sindh government has hinted handing over solid waste management back to the respective District Municipal Corporations (DMCs), a news source reported.

A special meeting was arranged to discuss the issue of solid waste management last week. During the meeting, Sindh Chief Minister (CM) Syed Murad Ali Shah directed the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) and the Local Government (LG) department to cancel contracts with private firms that have failed to deliver in this regard.
The CM also ordered the LG department to remove inefficient municipal commissioners from the DMCs. Meanwhile, LG Minister Saeed Ghani hinted to shut down the SSWMB and transfer its responsibility back with the DMCs.

An official belonging to one of the DMCs stated that the municipal corporations of the districts East, West, and South had already agreed to regain the responsibility for garbage collection and solid waste management.
