Karachi: The Sindh government has announced that it will ban the use of plastic bags in the province starting October 1, a news source reported. Advisor to the Chief Minister (CM) on Environment and Climate Change Barrister Murtaza Wahab expressed his views on the matter at a press briefing.

Wahab said that the government would not only impose the ban but would conduct an awareness campaign (for informing the traders and consumers of the harms of using plastic bags) during the days leading up to the ban implementation.
Simultaneously, the benefits of cloth bags will be explained and their use will be encouraged. The government has already started distributing cloth bags among the people of Karachi to create awareness and encourage people to comply with the new instructions.

Moreover, people who violate the law after October 1 will face strict legal action.
Previously, Advisor to the Prime Minister (PM) on Climate Change Malik Amin Aslam had informed the Standing Committee on Climate Change about the ban on plastic bags in Islamabad from August 14 and urged them to extend the cause nationwide.
