Karachi: In a bid to divide the province along administrative lines, the Government of Sindh has approved the separation of Keamari from West District, making it the seventh district of Karachi, according to a news report published on August 20.

A cabinet meeting chaired by Sindh Chief Minister (CM) Syed Murad Ali Shah also issued instructions for the provincial Board of Revenue (BOR) to work on a detailed proposal for dividing the province into manageable administrative units out of the districts with large populations or areas.
Reportedly, the West District currently is the largest district by population with 3.91 million people. The district has seven sub-divisions including Manghopir, SITE, Baldia, Orangi, Mominabad, Harbour and Mauripur. The Keamari District will comprise of four sub-divisions: SITE, Baldia, Harbour and Mauripur – with a population of 1.83 billion.

Furthermore, the chief minister also issued instructed the BOR officials to suggest suitable names for the various districts instead of calling them South, East or Central. He suggested that the Central District to be called Nazimabad District or the South District could be renamed Karachi District while other districts could be similarly named after popular localities.
