KARACHI: Sindh Governor Mr Ishrat-ul-Ebad Khan has issued an ordinance, under which if any person is found stealing/selling water from the canals, siphons, pumping stations, chambers, conduits and reservoirs of the Karachi Water & Sewerage Board or damaging/puncturing 18-inch to 24-inch main waterlines or even establishing illegal connections for residential, commercial or industrial purposes will be fined Rs 1 million and sentenced to 10 years in prison.
According to a public notice by the Karachi Water & Sewerage Board, the executive engineers of the board will register cases against water thieves, and chief engineers, superintending engineers and the officials of the legal department will pursue the cases.
The board has already initiated proceedings against suspected water thieves and has warned them to refrain from stealing water.
