Karachi: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, in a media briefing, urged the federal government to extend the lockdown by another week, according to news sources. He highlighted that it will not be a unilateral decision but will be tabled before the centre and different stakeholders.

The chief minister expressed concerns over the emerged cases from informal settlements and added that he was worried for those residing in slums and katchi abadis where large families live in small houses – rendering social distancing impossible. He urged the citizens to employ full caution and avoid crowded places. However, he also hinted that the lockdown could be eased in phases under the government’s new Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Meanwhile, provincial Information Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah said that the government will enforce more strict lockdown measures and stressed that people need to take the prevailing situation seriously. He further requested for police to resort to more effective measures against those who continuously violating the lockdown by leaving their homes without necessity or security measures (wear masks, gloves, practice social distancing).
