Karachi: Sindh Minister of Agriculture Mohammad Ismail Rahu on Wednesday stated that the government is taking measures to develop cold storage facilities and provide subsidies to farmers through the ‘Peoples Hari Card’ facility, according to news sources. Under the Peoples Hari Cards facility, PKR 3 billion subsidies will be rolled out to farmers during the fiscal year (FY) 2021-22.

Reportedly, the subsidy will be utilised on the provision of fertilisers, quality seeds and pesticides to increase the agricultural yield to promote food security.
Furthermore, explaining the scheme’s breakdown, Minister Rahu stated that the government intends to build 16 cold storages, for which 80% development funds would be provided by the government and the remaining 20% by farmers. Furthermore, he stated that the government will establish saline water treatment programmes to restore the soil’s fertility in order to develop the agricultural sector in Thar.

The province’s overall agriculture budget is now PKR 15.26 billion, including PKR 5 billion allocated under Annual Development Programmes for agriculture in the fiscal year 2021-22.
