Karachi: The Sindh government has unveiled an ambitious plan to tackle unemployment among youth by providing electric vehicles (EVs) on easy instalments. The initiative seeks to empower young individuals with a sustainable livelihood while promoting eco-friendly transportation.
Senior Provincial Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon announced the programme, emphasizing its dual focus on job creation and environmental sustainability. The scheme will offer unemployed youth EV taxis, enabling them to earn an income while contributing to the province’s green initiatives.
Minister Memon has instructed the Secretary of Transport to engage with banks and financial institutions to explore viable financial models for the project. The goal is to design repayment schemes that make it feasible for recipients to gradually own the taxis.
During a recent meeting with representatives from a Karachi-based EV taxi assembly company, officials briefed Memon on the environmental benefits of electric vehicles. He highlighted that the project aligns with the provincial government’s vision for a greener Sindh and aims to reduce the province’s carbon footprint.
“The introduction of EV taxis will not only create sustainable employment opportunities for our youth but also contribute to our broader environmental conservation goals,” Memon said.
The project is set to launch soon, with the first batch of EV taxis expected to provide an affordable and reliable means of income for unemployed youth in Sindh. The government is optimistic that the initiative will have a lasting impact, both economically and environmentally, by integrating eco-friendly transportation into the province’s infrastructure.
