Karachi: In an effort to increase the water supply of Karachi, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has decided to construct a new canal from Gujjo to Pipri with a capacity of 200 MGD, and has also directed the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) to reduce the 30% line losses to save 58 MGD water for the city, according to news sources.
He made this decision while presiding over a meeting with the KWSB that discussed ways to improve the water supply systems of K-I, II and III for better water provision to the city. Chairperson Planning and Development (P&D) Nahid Shah, Minister for Local Government Syed Nasir Shah, PSCM Sajid Jamal Abro, Managing Director (MD) Water Board Asadullah Khan and other relevant officials were also in attendance for the meeting.

MD KWSB and Minister Nisar Shah briefed the meeting, saying that the current water demand of the city stands at 1,200 MGD and the total supply is 406 MGD. To which the CM said that the situation asked for new water projects to be planned and implemented promptly.
The systems that offer the bulk of the water supply to the city include K- I (280 MGD), K-II (100 MGD), K-III (100 MGD) and Hub Dam source (100 MGD), with line loses estimated close to 174 MGD. In response, the CM asked for improvements in the system, saying that the water board will get the needed support, but should become a self-sustained organisation in its own right.

CM Murad also directed the water board to construct a canal from Gujjo to Pipri, with a capacity of around 250 MGD water to be directly pumped in to the city’s water supply. The project is estimated to cost PKR 11 billion.
