Karachi: Sindh Chief Minister (CM) Syed Murad Ali Shah has approved a grant worth PKR 88 million for the District Municipal Corporations (DMCs) and the Karachi District Council to facilitate their efforts geared towards a continuation of the ‘Clean My Karachi’ drive, a news source reported.

He sanctioned the funds during a meeting held to review the cleanliness drive which had previously ended on October 21. He directed the DMCs and the council to get their machineries repaired with the funds in order to continue with the cleanliness programme.
CM Murad stated that the Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) was performing its duties in the South, East, and Malir districts. He added that the board was responsible the areas’ cleanliness. He said that the provincial executive would release funds for the Central, Korangi and West district DMCs, as well as the district council.

As per details, the chief minister announced to provide:
- PKR 37 million for Central district
- PKR 17 million for Korangi
- PKR 22 million for West district
- PKR 12 million for Karachi district
Further, Murad directed the SSWMB officials to take action against Chinese firms – contracted for picking up garbage in the city – if they failed to perform their duties. He said that DMC chairpersons should assign the sweeping and front-end collection work to the union councils. He added that the union councils were smaller units with more relevant staff for properly cleaning their respective areas. He said that DMC chairpersons should carry on with their supervision duties.

The Sindh CM said that the deputy commissioners (DCs) should identify model areas for hygiene, and expand parameters of these areas too. He urged the DCs to warn market associations against littering. He added that they should also bound builders to remove debris and construction materials at their own expense, or pay a fine otherwise.
The DCs and DMC chairpersons also received instructions on creating at least two garbage transfer stations (GTS) in their respective districts.
