Islamabad: Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan on Tuesday (November 16) said that the extension of the Sialkot-Kharian Motorway up to Rawalpindi would be a major infrastructural ‘game changer’ project for the region, news sources reported. He said that the project will increase transit efficiency, transportation of goods and services in the industrial region.

Convening a meeting in Islamabad, the premier was informed by the National Highway Authority (NHA) about the ongoing road infrastructure project in the country. The meeting was told that the authority is taking steps to ensure efficient and low-cost construction of 27 new road projects of 1,753 kilometres in length. Moreover, the meeting was informed that the government is constructing the Kharian-Sialkot Motorway project at a cost of PKR 70 million per kilometre, as compared to the previously estimated PKR 370 million.

It is worth noting that the government approved the 69-kilometre-long Sialkot-Kharian Motorway project in August 2021. Under the Public-Private Partnership (3P) funding method, the PKR 27.8 billion project is expected to be completed in 24 months.
