Gilgit: China will fund the construction of two hydropower projects, a women’s university, cancer and cardiac hospitals, a medical college, and a logistics hub in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), a news source reported. The Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) has included the projects in the multi-billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project.
According to Babar Aman, secretary of GB Planning and Development Department, a special economic zone (SEZ) will be established in Maqpoondas area of Gilgit.

He said JCC, which is the apex decision-making body on CPEC, accorded approval to a 100MW hydropower project near Karakoram International University in Gilgit, and an 80MW hydropower project in Phander area of Ghizer.
It is pertinent to mention that as many as 10 CPEC projects worth USD 19 billion have already been completed, while 12 projects are in their final phases.
According to officials in the CPEC Secretariat, the installation of fibre-optic cable from Rawalpindi to Khunjerab has been completed. They added that more than 700,000 jobs would be created by 2030.
