Karachi: The Sindh Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) will host a public consultation meeting on the Malir Expressway project, news sources reported on March 1. The meeting/public hearing will begin at 10:30 am on March 9 at the Royal Palace Lawn and Banquet, located on the Main Shahra-e-Faisal – near Malir Bridge.

Reportedly, the meeting will hear public concerns about the project and its impact on the local communities. There will also be a discussion on the project’s Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) study, which is an 800-page long document and was completed by National Engineering Services Pakistan (NESPAK). The proposed Malir Expressway project will start before Jam Sadiq Bridge on Korangi Road. It will pass through the Korangi and Malir districts along the right bank of the Malir River. The 38.75-kilometre long road will end at Kathor near M-9 Super Highway. According to reports, more than 400 residences and 40 acres of private agricultural land in the historic goths along the Malir Expressway’s path may be affected by the project.

Malir Expressway Project Director Niaz Soomro has already confirmed the demolition of 443 houses with 47 acres of private agricultural land in Memon Goth, Samu Goth and Lasi Goth. It is important to note that the MEW project is one of the flagship projects of the Sindh government that was inaugurated in December 2020. The project will be completed with a total budget of PKR 29 billion and in 30 months.
