Islamabad: A Senate panel has suggested making amendments to the railway laws in a bid to make the Railways Police more effective, a news source reported.

Participants at a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Pakistan Railways, presided over by Senator Asad Khan Junejo, called for reviewing the department’s lease policy.
In response, Inspector General Railways Police Wajid Zia said that utmost efforts were being make to bring revolutionary changes in Pakistan Railways and its affiliated departments.
He said that the railways retrieved 4,000 acres of encroached land valued at PKR 15.7 billion over the past five years. He informed that the department owns a total of 170,976 acres of land.

Zia said that efforts were being made to recover 3,179 acres of railway land in different cities. Out of 3,179 acres, he said, 1,574 acres of land remain under illegal occupation in Lahore, followed by 514 acres in Karachi, 528 acres in Sukkur, 248 acres in Multan, and 225 acres in Rawalpindi.
