Islamabad: The Supreme Court (SC) on Thursday ordered the federal government to file its response with regard to the proposed privatisation of the Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM), according to news sources.

Headed by Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed, a three-judge bench of the SC presided over the case. During the hearing, the chief justice asked as to why the PSM employees were receiving monthly wages despite the mill ceasing its operations since 2015. The court ordered the Secretary Ministry of Industries to review the matter and submit his response on a timely basis.

To this effect, the apex court remarked that the government should hire new people if it was interested to operationalise the mill.
Previously, the federal government had announced its decision to postpone the PSM privatisation until further notice. According to reports, top government officials are divided on the matter of whether to privatise the PSM or to revive it under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) framework.
