Islamabad: The Supreme Court (SC) recently directed the authorities concerned to address the concerns of orphans and widows deprived of their inheritance rights on an urgent basis, a news source reported on December 10.

It further ordered the revenue departments concerned to observe vigilance in cases wherein family members give purported gifts in an attempt to deprive daughters and widows of their due ownership rights in properties.
Justice Qazi Faez Isa authored the five-page ruling in a case pertaining to an inheritance dispute dating back to 2006. The complainants said they had been denied inheritance in the estate of Masnab Khan who had gifted their share of land to his nephews.
‘The concerned officers must fully satisfy themselves as to the identity of the purported donor/transferee and strict compliance must be ensured with the applicable laws, as repeatedly held by this Court,’ according to the judgment.

Moreover, the top court noted that the Constitution safeguards property, including the inherited property, under Article 24(1) and that the protection of women and children is guaranteed by Article 25(3) of the Constitution.
