Karachi: The Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan has lifted the ban on construction of high-rise buildings in the city, a news source reported. The apex court had placed the ban back in May 2017 to deal with shortage of potable water and poor sanitation conditions in the city.
The verdict was given by SC larger bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar while hearing the petition filed by Association of Builders and Developers (ABAD) against the ban. ABAD has been actively pursuing the case as the ban directly impacted over 1.5 million people linked with the industry. That’s in addition to the connected industries that produce and import construction materials.

Reviewing its old verdict, SC has now allowed construction of high-rise buildings beyond six storeys; developers can now build 26-storey high residential and commercial projects. The apex court has however made it mandatory that construction activities be carried out according to the building bylaws specified by the Sindh Building Control Authority.
