Karachi: The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) on Sunday issued a public warning against fake callers impersonating as its banking officials and seeking personal information, a news source reported. The central bank took notice of the issue after receiving reports of the said absconders calling citizens under the said aliases to inquire about their deposit accounts information in the wake of the coronavirus spread.

SBP sources revealed that in many cases, the fake callers were claiming that personal information was required to ensure that the individual’s account keeps running smoothly if the ATM services become unavailable.
The SBP officials have clarified that the central bank has never sought personal details of account holders of any bank. They added that all such calls were fraudulent. They advised that the public should not respond to these calls or provide any information.

SBP has directed the public to report such fake calls to the banks concerned immediately. They can also report the calls on SBP helpline 021-111-727-273 during business hours or via email on cpd.helpdesk@sbp.org.pk.
