Karachi: The Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) has begun demolishing the five-storey residential building located in Karachi’s Rizvia Colony, a news source reported. Previously, SBCA vacated the building as it started to lean to one side.

SBCA Additional Director General Ashkar Dawar said the building had developed major cracks and begun to lean due to construction of additional floors. Meanwhile, the authority had vacated the adjoining three or four buildings before beginning with the demolition process. The building would take two to three days for complete demolition, SBCA sources added.
Dawar stated that they had declared the Gulbahar Building in Karachi’s Rizvia Colony – constructed over a plot of 72 square yards – as hazardous and asked the residents to vacate it before the coronavirus-lockdown was imposed. However, the authority could not follow up on this notice as the provincial government imposed the lockdown. He added that there are over 300 such hazardous buildings across Karachi. He revealed that the authority plans to demolish all of them but the residents are not willing to vacate them.

Currently, the building by-laws in Karachi do not allow more than two storeys above ground for a plot measuring up to 80 square yards.
