Rawalpindi: The divisional administration has decided to execute a survey to ascertain the illegal constructions along the Soan River – recently unearthed during the heavy rains that damaged some houses, according to a news source published on August 29.

Rawalpindi Commissioner (retired) Captain Mohammad Mehmood visited the area along the Soan River to inspect the damages caused by the flood-situation in and adjacent to the Sharoon Colony. Many unauthorised structures were discovered on the river banks during this visit.
The commissioner directed the district revenue department to conduct a survey to identify the illegal construction along the river, so as to an action plan could be formulated to eliminate the said encroachments and also to avoid the flooding situation in the future.

Over 100 houses were affected by the rising water levels in the Soan River, as it entered the Sharoon Colony on Thursday. The affected residents were transferred to safer places by Rescue 1122 officials.
Moreover, the commissioner was told that the Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) has written to the housing societies along the Soan River about their revenue limits. However, no response was received from them. Mehmood said that under the law, no construction was permissible along the river banks and its right of way – which is only reserved for the agriculture purposes.
