Rawalpindi: The Rawalpindi Division administration has reported a total of 438 illegal housing schemes in the division that are defrauding people of their hard-earned money, news sources reported on March 27. The area of Fateh Jhang is reported to have the highest number of unlawful housing projects.

According to the administrative records, there are 318 unlawful housing projects in Rawalpindi district, with the remainder 98 in Attock district. The unlawful housing schemes have been conducting property transactions without meeting legal requirements. Commissioner Rawalpindi Division Noor-ul-Amin Mengal has said that the terms ‘illegal’ and ‘unapproved’ are synonymous. Therefore, people should regard them as the same when investing in schemes. He also stated that, in addition to making data regarding unlawful housing plans public, a centralised mechanism for public awareness would also be established.

It is also worth noting that the report stated that 6,000 or 69% of the country’s 8,767 housing societies are unlawful or have not filed their compliance certifications and papers. The Punjab government has established a panel to oversee the legalisation of illegal housing schemes.
