Islamabad: The Russian government has finally provided Pakistan a sanctions-free structure for the development of the strategic North-South Gas Pipeline project, which is estimated to cost USD 2 billion — according to news reports. Sources within the federal government further revealed that the construction work on the project will be initiated sometime during June or July later this year.

This step was lauded by the Pakistan government, as it had long been seeking a sanctions-free structure for the gas pipeline. Additionally, Russia has replaced the company that was previously in charge of the project and granted the supervision rights to a firm called North-South Gas Pipeline private limited. This is a Joint Venture of LLC, Eurasian Pipeline Consortium and Federal State Unitary Enterprise (FSUE) that is the Centre of Operations Services of the Ministry of Energy of the Russian Federation.

According to the source, the government has also invited official from the Russian government for dialogue on the technical and commercial aspects of the project so that an agreement on the matter can be reached by March 2020.
