Lahore: The Ravi Urban Development Authority (RUDA) has proposed downstream (man-made) constructed wetlands to address the challenges being faced by River Ravi, a news source reported on January 19.

As per the details, initiatives are underway for the restoration of River Ravi Wetland in order to commemorate February 2 as ‘World Wetland Day’. The authority has proposed a man-made wetland, which will restore the ecology, and natural habitat for aquatic life, flora and fauna, and improve water quality. The authority released a statement stating that the authority knows swamps, natural ponds, wetlands, natural water bodies, and ecological pockets are essential for the survival of the biodiversity and river.

The news source mentioned that the River Ravi is facing challenges like droughts, deteriorating water quality, flooding, lack of wastewater treatment, loss of habitat, and contaminated groundwater. RUDA has plans to rehabilitate the dying River into a perennial freshwater body by developing an eco-friendly, sustainable, and multipurpose Riverfront.
