While addressing the inauguration ceremony at Kala Khatai – a small town on the outskirts of Lahore – the PM acceded that the project was ambitious in nature and its completion would be tricky. He said that ‘there will be many obstacles along the way but we must persevere’ and issued directions for the provincial government to execute the RRUD project with all the possible haste.
Khan, while highlighting the features of the RRUD project, said that six million trees would be planted in it. He said that the local and international investors have also evinced their interest in the mega-urban project.

Moreover, the prime minister pointed out that over 40% of the city’s population was living in slums, being ignored for several years and facing issues like reduction in the provision of potable water as the city’s sewerage waste mixes with the river – increasing its arsenic content. Khan revealed that the government would develop the project’s basic infrastructure, while the ‘rest of the city would be raised from investments’.
Furthermore, the premier promised that there will also be affordable housing in the new project, alongside separate education, and Information and Technology (IT) centres. Reportedly, the RRUD project will be the second properly planned and the first ‘Green city’ of Pakistan – with high rises that would protect and preserve the environment.
