Rawalpindi: The Rawalpindi Metropolitan Corporation (RMC) has stated that it would charge double composition fee from violators of building by-laws, a news source reported. Prior to the announcement, the RMC conducted a survey of buildings within its jurisdiction and found that 90% of the structures were seen to violate the rules.

RMC’s planning department prepared the report to identify all structures constructed in the city in violation of the by-laws. This report indicated that several commercial and residential buildings did not provide open spaces or car parking facility in the basement as required under the building codes.
The report revealed that some commercial plaza owners had constructed more shops in spaces allocated for car parking. Many commercial buildings also consisted of additional floors without the approval of the development authority, the report stated.

On the other hand, the report indicated that several residential builders had porches and boundary walls constructed on land not included in the original demarcation of the plots. This counted as encroachment of state land.
The RMC has now sent notices to the owners of the structures constructed illegally. The civic body has asked them to get the buildings regularised. However, RMC has stated that it would charge the owners double composition fee for the regularisation process.

In case of non-payment of this fee, RMC has stated that the owners would face strict action; including sealing or demolition of the buildings.
