Some 800 K people are living on contaminated waters in the rural areas surrounding the capital. Thousands of people do not have access to any kind of water and those who do are getting contaminated water. CDA seems to be nonchalant about the whole scenario, as a massive number of people do not seem to have any water or sanitation facilities.
About 133 villages are hit by this problem. All these 133 villages come under 12 union councils and they are forced to drink polluted water while many are left without it. The main source of water to all these areas is the solitary Barakahu filtration plant. Pakistan Council for Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) released a research showing that 59 water samples collected from these villages were contaminated and not fit for human consumption. It may be noted that 37b filtration plants were installed in the city while only one was in the rural areas. In addition, most of the filtration plants in the city even out of order. The federal environment ministry planned to install 13 more plants in rural areas but to date nothing has materialized.
