Islamabad: Talks are underway to discuss the reopening of Saidu Sharif airport to promote tourism in Swat, according to a news source. Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) CEO Arshad Malik and Federal Minister for Communications Murad Saeed held a meeting in this regard.
Saeed emphasised that Swat is an important tourist destination which deserved to be promoted accordingly. He stated that that PIA would work with the relevant authorities to get the airport up and running on a priority basis. He added that tourism is an important source of foreign exchange which must be facilitated.
Saidu Sharif airport was originally built in 1978 and had been lying defunct for some time now.
Chief Minister Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Mahmood Khan recently expressed his support for the extension and upgrading of the airport. Khan stated that the region is a potential hub for trade, tourism and investment, and expressed his resolve to develop it accordingly.
