Karachi: The Supreme Court has given a deadline to the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), District Municpal Corporations (DMCs) and civic agencies to remove all the garbage in Karachi within a week, according to a news report. A three-member bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, gave these instructions while hearing a petition on drinking water and sewerage in Karachi.
The court noted that the federal government had also released funds for water and sanitation projects and that improvements should be seen soon. Chief Secretary Rizwan Memon informed the court that short term projects will be completed by June 30 this year. He also stated that around 9,500 tons of garbage is being lifted from the city by the district municipal corporations and private contractors and this capacity has been increased by 4,000 to 5,000 tonnes.
