Lahore: The underground water table level in the city has dropped to an alarming 164 feet, a news source reported. The current drop, which is at 2 meters per year, poses major threat, and the situation could become highly devastating by 2025.
To cope with the dropping levels in the underground water table, the Government of Punjab has formed the Water Commission, which has taken district officers on board. As per the news report, Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) and the private sector extract 1,496 million cubic meters of water annually, which back in 1980 was 232 million cubic meters. During these years, the number of operational tube wells has increased from 125 to 600. At the same time, the agriculture department, private housing schemes and the cantonment board has their own tube wells extracting underground water.
Reportedly, WASA has apprised the Punjab Govt. of the current situation. Responding to this report, WASA Managing Director Syed Zahid Aziz said that the department has formed a long- and short-term policy. Water Commission Chairman Justice (R) Ali Akbar Qureshi said that a water force has also been formed to help save water in the city.
