Rawalpindi: The Punjab government has ordered Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) to start work on two mega projects – Rawalpindi Ring Road and Leh Expressway and Flood Channel, according to a news story published on Wednesday (January 19).

As per the details, Planning and Development (P&D) Board gave the go-ahead to RDA to start development work on a 38-kilometre main carriageway, from Banth to Thalian, at the cost of PKR 23.6 billion.
A senior government official (whose name was not disclosed) mentioned that the P&D board has requested to start necessary administrative approval for the project without the Foreign Exchange Component (FEC) as per the decision taken in the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) meeting on December 22, 2021.
Moreover, the official stated that a comprehensive study will be conducted by RDA’s Consultant M/s Nespak for the redirection of traffic from Rawalpindi Ring Road to Islamabad-Lahore (M-2) Motorway along with the flow of traffic towards other highways and motorways.
Reportedly, the provincial government will approach the federal government for a loan as Federal Public Sector Development Programme funds will not be provided.

As far as the Leh Expressway project is concerned, the RDA will start work on the project at the cost of PKR 24.9 billion. The senior official stated that ECNEC approved the project under the condition that the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) study will be completed before its implementation. He went on to say that the implementation period of the project was six months.
