RDA unveils plan to tackle traffic, pollution in Rawalpindi

Rawalpindi: The Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) has announced a series of ambitious initiatives to address the city’s worsening traffic congestion and air pollution, aiming to enhance urban living standards and promote sustainability.

RDA Director General Kinza Murtaza outlined the plan, which includes expanding pedestrian streets, creating dedicated bike and motorcycle lanes, and developing new parking facilities along the heavily trafficked Murree Road from Katchery Chowk to Faizabad. Additionally, key bazaars are set to be transformed into pedestrian-friendly zones to reduce vehicular traffic and encourage greener transportation options.

“Our goal is to make Rawalpindi more accessible, environmentally friendly, and safer for its residents,” Murtaza said. The RDA has also proposed relocating the cattle market and transport hubs from GT Road to alleviate congestion, with the plan currently under review by the Commissioner of Rawalpindi.

The RDA has banned new housing developments on agricultural land to further combat pollution and restricted tree-cutting to preserve green spaces. The Municipal Corporation has been directed to remove encroachments along key routes, including Murree Road, to improve traffic flow.

The RDA is taking action against illegal housing schemes as part of its broader environmental strategy. Over 200 unapproved developments are under investigation, a move aimed at ensuring regulated urban growth.

Murtaza emphasized the authority’s commitment to tackling Rawalpindi’s growing smog problem, stating that these measures will help reduce pollution and improve air quality across the city.

With these initiatives, the RDA is set to redefine urban life in Rawalpindi by prioritizing sustainable development, enhanced mobility, and environmental protection. The authority’s proactive approach signals a brighter, cleaner, and more accessible future for the city.
