Rawalpindi: The Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) has placed a ban on all construction activities in the rural areas connected with the housing schemes that have been selected for an audit — in order to verify the latter’s adherence to its building codes framework, a news source reported. As per the publication, the RDA has additionally decided to broadcast its decisions by using the PA (public address system) in the locations’ mosques.

The decision to ban construction on these properties was taken during a meeting presided over by Interior Minister Brig (R) Ijaz Shah. Rawalpindi Commissioner Capt. (R) Muhammad Mehmood and senior officials of the RDA, Capital Development Authority (CDA) and the district administration were also present at the meeting.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Rawalpindi Commissioner Mehmood issued an implementation report, which stated that the RDA would conduct an independent audit of approved housing schemes in its administered areas, in order to determine if the communicated building codes had been thoroughly followed.
In the meanwhile, the civic authority has also started to raze the site offices of illegal housing schemes. It has also decided to hire the services of professional informers, who will assist help by sharing details on illegal construction activities with the city. The RDA will keep their names and related details confidential.

To further make the crackdown drive produce more concrete results, the commissioner has ordered the formation of a functional link between the RDA, CDA and the Rawalpindi Metropolitan Corporation.
