Rawalpindi: The Punjab government has decided to assign the metropolitan city status to Rawalpindi, a news source reported.

Provincial Minister for Local Government and Community Development Basharat Raja expressed his views on the matter during a meeting with office-bearers of the Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce & Industry (RCCI) on Sunday.
Explaining the provincial government’s focus for developing urban centres across Punjab, Raja said that Rawalpindi has the potential to emerge as a tourist attraction. He added that the authorities concerned planned to construct a parking plaza on Murree Road.

The minister informed the attendees that the executive recently allocated funds for the Leh Expressway project. This proposed initiative would help address issues pertaining to the mass transit system in the city, he added.
He also lauded RCCI’s effort for launching the ‘Glorious Rawalpindi’ project aimed at beautifying the city. He assured the chamber of the government’s full cooperation and support in resolving issues pertaining to encroachments, parking spaces, relocation of wholesale fruit and vegetable markets to Ring Road, waste management, and restoration of heritage sites.

Moreover, he said that the government would provide financial support for constructing a link road (that will connect Rawat Industrial Estate with the city), renovation of the Gymkhana, and various other development projects in the city.
