Rawalpindi: For the preparation of the city’s 2040 master plan, Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) has sent terms of reference (TORs) for approval to the Punjab Housing Secretary, reported a news source. The estimated expenditure for the plan’s preparation is PKR 50 million. The funds will be issued under the Annual Development Programme.

The previous master plan for the city was devised back in 1996. Due to unrestrained population growth, the city’s infrastructure has now become inadequate to cater to citizens effectively.

A new master plan is indispensable for fixing existing issues in the sewerage system, supply mechanism for water, gas and electricity, hospitals, schools, and road infrastructures. Under the new plan, RDA will ensure that residential areas are not used for commercial purposes, and vice versa.

Due to violation of laws defined in the old master plan, several commercial and residential areas currently face serious management issues.
Reportedly, work on the formation of Islamabad Master Plan 2040 is underway.
