Islamabad: Railways Minister Sheikh Rasheed recently stated that the railways planned to improve its cargo services in a bid to facilitate commercial activities in Islamabad, according to a news source. He offered assurance that Railways would adopt all possible measures to resolve any issues faced by the business community.

He expressed these views during a meeting with a delegation of the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI). Minister Rasheed said that the department was open to the idea of forming a public-private partnership and hand over the control of the Islamabad dry port to the ICCI, if they presented a comprehensive proposal for the department’s consideration.
He added that the dry ports of Lahore and Karachi were being run by private establishments and the one in Islamabad could also be handed over to assist the business community.

In response, ICCI President Ahmed Hassan Moughal said that by switching to trucks, the cost of goods transportation had spiked and the train service was still the most affordable solution worldwide, if the Railways can improve its cargo services.
