Punjab University (PU) employees appear to be unhappy with the idea of a state-of-the-art Rs 165 billion Metro Rail Transit System (Orange Line Metro), because the project is likely to affect their properties in Punjab University Employees Cooperative Housing Society.
The university employees staged a rally at Punjab University’s new campus on Tuesday, which was led by PU Academic Staff Association (PUASA) President Prof Dr Hassan Mobeen Alam and Secretary Dr Mahboob Hussain.
So, what is the main concern of these PU employees? Professor (R) Mr Abdul Kareem of Punjab University told Zameen.com that the Orange Line Metro project would take over employees’ properties in Block B of Punjab University Employees Cooperative Housing Society. He said the rally was staged to request the authorities concerned to stop disturbing the current and prospective residents of the society.
He also said that the PUASA would stage another rally tomorrow at Punjab University’s old campus and if need be, the protest would be extended further to other places.
A Lahore Development Authority (LDA) official, who spoke to Zameen.com on the condition of anonymity, said the Orange Line Metro project was a valuable project for the residents of the city and the authority would acquire the required land along its route only after fairly compensating the land-owners, and staying within the bounds of the relevant laws.
The protesters, on the other hand, have expressed the intention of protesting in front of Chief Minister’s House if the authorities concerned fail to satisfy their demands.
The Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Association (FAPUASA) has also extended its support to the protesting PU employees.
Without giving my personal opinion on the topic, I leave this discussion open for those who are going to be affected by the Orange Line Metro project – for better or for worse – especially the PU employees. Please use the comments section below to share your concerns with us.
The plan was made in 2007 when the society was not operational now govt is negotiating with Chinese to extent it by 1-2 kilometers to save the society
It’s not the case of extending the road but creating a depot for metro so there is plenty of free space near the Ali town which can be utilized
Thank you for your feedback.
